Johnnie Ring. A name etched in bronze, a life woven into the very fabric of Temple University. Here, at the heart of the campus, stands a small statue of a young man, a Bible in one hand, a sword in the other. This unassuming figure embodies a story of heroism, faith, and the unexpected birth of an educational institution. The Johnny Ring Statue isn’t just a piece of art. It’s a testament to the profound impact one life can have on another, rippling through generations. The inscription on the statue tells the tale. Johnnie Ring, a young man serving as an orderly to Captain Russell H. Conwell during the Civil War. His life was defined by his devotion to Conwell and his deep religious faith. During a surprise Confederate attack, Union troops were routed. Amidst the chaos and danger, Johnnie Ring raced across a burning bridge, dodging enemy fire. His mission? To retrieve Conwell’s ceremonial sword, a gift from the city of Springfield. He succeeded, but at a terrible cost. Johnnie suffered severe burns and died later that night, with Conwell kneeling in prayer by his side. This tragic event transformed Conwell. It ignited within him a calling to the ministry, and ultimately, led him to found Temple University. The inscription tells us Conwell vowed to live a life for Johnnie Ring, dedicating eight hours of his day to Johnnie’s memory and eight to his own work. The Johnny Ring Statue reminds us that without this young man’s courage and sacrifice, Conwell might never have shared his famous “Acres of Diamonds” speech, the story of finding opportunity in one’s own backyard. And without Conwell, Temple University, this very institution that has provided education to countless individuals, might never have existed. Johnnie Ring, a lad who didn’t die in vain. His spirit lives on in the heart of this university.
