“What if these walls could talk?” a child’s voice echoed near the John Wesley Methodist Church. A ripple of laughter followed. The John Wesley Methodist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and community. Its story begins in 1944, amidst the turmoil of World War II. While the world was at war, a small seed of faith was planted in West Ashley. It started with communion at the home of Mrs. Sophie Smith, a housebound member of Trinity Methodist Church. She urged her pastor, Rev. R. Wright Spears, to establish a Methodist church in the growing suburban area. Her plea didn’t fall on deaf ears. Rev. Homer Schuler, taking up the cause, commissioned Margaret Dukes to gauge the community’s interest. The response was overwhelmingly positive. On June 8, 1944, thirty-four souls gathered for the first service at the Saint Andrews Exchange Club. The air vibrated with the spirit of a new beginning. Sunday school classes were held under the shade of trees, while adult classes convened in nearby homes. By October 1944, the John Wesley Methodist Church was officially chartered with 128 members, a testament to the community’s thirst for spiritual connection. The church’s namesake, John Wesley, seemed a fitting choice, honoring the founder of Methodism. Rev. Edward Gott became the first minister, guiding the fledgling congregation. As the church family grew, the need for a permanent home became evident. The first structure, a Sunday school building with an adjacent parsonage, was completed in 1946. The sanctuary followed in 1951, its very fabric woven with the generosity of the members. Windows, pews, offering plates – all were donated, symbolizing the shared dedication. The church’s growth continued, prompting expansion in 1958. The parsonage was relocated, making way for a west wing, housing additional classrooms, a fellowship hall, and a kitchen. The 60s and 70s witnessed the installation of a magnificent pipe organ in 1971, its melodies filling the sanctuary. The Aldersgate Chapel, a gift from Mrs. J.T. Stieglitz, was dedicated in 1978. The 80s and beyond saw renovations of the sanctuary, the west building, and the original structure, ensuring the church’s ability to serve the community’s evolving needs. The John Wesley Methodist Church continues to be a beacon of hope and faith in West Ashley. Its story, born from a simple request during wartime, stands as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of community.
