Founded in 1982 John Paul College stands proudly. It’s a testament to collaboration. Four clergymen from different denominations united. They built this school on ecumenism. This wasn’t easy. The Brisbane Catholic Education Office initially refused a request for a Catholic secondary school. Undeterred the committee forged ahead. They partnered with local Catholic Anglican and Uniting parishes. John Paul College opened on Australia Day 1982. Only 144 students in Years 8 and 9 attended.

Today John Paul College is a thriving institution. It boasts a sprawling 33-hectare campus. Over 1700 students attend from early learning to Year 12. Two percent are Indigenous Australians. Twenty-four percent have non-English-speaking backgrounds. The school even has its own International College assisting students. Craig Merritt is the current principal. He carries on a legacy started by Cec Munns. Munns was the founding principal. He also pushed for an ecumenical approach.

John Paul College’s success isn’t just academic. It’s also renowned for its extensive co-curricular activities. Students can participate in instrumental vocal dance and drama lessons. The school also excels in sports. Many notable alumni have gone on to impressive achievements. Some are Olympians. Others are successful in business and the arts. Even a famous Australian singer attended. However the school’s history is not without its shadows. One notable former student became a radicalized terrorist. This is a stark reminder of the complexities of life and education.

The school is divided into three schools: Primary Senior and International. The primary school has further divisions: Early Learning Junior Primary and Senior Primary. Students are allocated to one of four houses: Gilmour Burke Doulin and Enright. Siblings are always placed in the same house. The college has a boarding program too. Fenton Village provides village-style accommodation. Students in Years 7 to 12 can live there. Each house accommodates eight boarders. The college’s motto Unity Christ Learning embodies its mission. It’s a place where students develop exceptional skills. They learn to courageously enrich society. The college’s war cry and song reflect its unique culture and history. They acknowledge the Jukambi tribe the land’s original inhabitants. They also celebrate sister school relationships in Japan and New Zealand.

John Paul College isn’t just a school. It’s a vibrant community. A place of learning growth and belonging. It’s a testament to faith cooperation and the pursuit of excellence. It is a school proud of its rich history and bright future.
