Across the street from Ebenezer Baptist Church, where John Lewis worshipped and where his funeral was held, stands the John Lewis Hero Mural. It’s a towering tribute to the civil rights icon, larger than life and impossible to miss. The mural, painted by the art collective The Loss Prevention, depicts a powerful moment from the 1963 March on Washington. John Lewis, young and impassioned, is mid-speech, his hand gesturing as if urging the crowd to action. Above him, the word “HERO” is emblazoned, a simple yet powerful declaration of his legacy. The John Lewis Hero Mural wasn’t commissioned by the city or some grand committee. It began with a chance encounter at an art supply store. The artists met Lewis, were inspired, and the idea took root. The mural’s location in Sweet Auburn carries deep symbolism. It’s a historic neighborhood, the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. and a center of Black business and activism. The mural’s placement near the Downtown Connector, a highway that cut through Black neighborhoods, adds another layer of meaning. It’s a reminder of the struggles faced by the community and the resilience of its leaders, like Lewis. The mural’s creation in 2012 was a community effort. Funding came from local businesses, and support came from then-City Councilman Kwanza Hall. The unveiling was a celebration, with Lewis himself adding the final touch, dotting the “i” in his name. In the years since its creation, the John Lewis Hero Mural has become an iconic landmark. It has been featured in films and television, voted the best mural in Atlanta by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. After Lewis’s death in 2020, the mural became a gathering place for mourners and a site of reflection. Now, plans are underway to create a park at the mural’s base, the Good Trouble John Lewis Memorial Park. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to fighting for justice and equality. It’s a place where people can gather, remember his legacy, and be inspired to continue his work. The John Lewis Hero Mural is more than just a painting. It’s a testament to the power of art, the importance of community, and the enduring legacy of a true hero.
