“Overlooked hero” is a term some use for General John Glover. Here we stand before the John Glover Statue. It stands here on Commonwealth Avenue.

The John Glover Statue commemorates a remarkable man. Glover was a soldier. He was also a fisherman and a merchant. He was even a politician.

John Glover was born in Salem. Later, he moved to Marblehead. He became a successful merchant. He owned ships. He traded internationally.

The John Glover Statue before you is a bronze sculpture. It depicts Glover in his military uniform. He holds a sword. His left foot rests on a cannon. The statue is quite large. It stands eight feet tall. It rests on a granite base. The base measures six and a half feet high. Martin Milmore created the statue in 1875.

Glover’s impact on the Revolutionary War was significant. He rallied a naval battalion of 500 sailors. They were known as the Marblehead Mariners. This unit became the 14th Continental Regiment.

During the war, Glover and his regiment saved the Continental Army many times. After the Battle of Brooklyn, Washington needed to evacuate his troops. Glover’s regiment evacuated the entire army in one night. This prevented a crushing defeat by the British.

Glover’s regiment was one of three chosen to defend Manhattan. Glover designed a strategy to hide his men behind walls. They would retreat as the British entered the city. This tactic allowed Glover’s men to attack without threat of retaliation.

When Washington planned the attack on the Hessians in New Jersey, Glover transported them across the Delaware River. He did so without alerting the British.

In February 1777, Washington promoted Glover to brigadier general. Glover hesitated. He wanted to return home to his family. Washington convinced him to accept the promotion.

During the Saratoga Campaign, a redcoat deserter warned Glover of a British ambush. Glover trusted the man. He notified General Gates. This action saved the army from defeat. After the British surrender, Glover’s brigade guarded the captured troops.

The John Glover Statue serves as a reminder. It is a reminder of his strategies and integrity. These qualities helped change the course of the war. He may not be as famous as Washington or Hamilton. Still, his military influence makes him worthy of remembrance.

Some say the sculpture was not well received. One critic called it showy and theatrical. But its presence on Commonwealth Avenue keeps Glover’s memory alive.

A bronze plaque at the base details Glover’s efforts. It states that his courage, energy, and patriotism secured the confidence of Washington. It also ensured the gratitude of his country.

Take a moment to appreciate this monument. It honors a man who dedicated his life to the cause of American independence. The John Glover Statue is a testament to his enduring legacy.
