He wanted a location close to scholarly resources. He even visited potential sites with architect John Carl Warnecke in 1963. The John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum’s architect I M Pei faced numerous setbacks. The original plans for a larger complex had to be scaled down. Pei had to use less expensive materials like concrete instead of his preferred stone. Even the chosen site presented challenges. It was a former landfill requiring extensive work to prepare for construction. Despite these obstacles the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum opened in 1979. President Jimmy Carter and members of the Kennedy family attended the dedication ceremony.
