Established in 1897 John D. Runkle School stands proudly in Brookline. It’s a place where history and learning intertwine. The school is named after John Daniel Runkle a significant figure. He chaired the Brookline School Committee. He was also a passionate advocate for math and technical education. Runkle was a founder of MIT and served as its second president.

Between 2010 and 2012 a major renovation and expansion took place. During that time students temporarily attended the Old Lincoln School. They referred to it as Runkle on Route 9. The renovated Runkle School on Druce Street reopened in October 2012.
Today John D Runkle School serves a large population of students. It accommodates children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is home to Brookline’s Spanish English Language Learner program. It also houses the district’s Reaching Independence through Structured Education RISE program. This program caters to students with autism diagnoses.
The RISE program uses a team approach. Students receive academic instruction social skills training and behavioral intervention. Services are provided in various settings. This ranges from separate classrooms to full inclusion in general education. The main goal is to increase independence in various skills.
