Who was John Brinckman? You might ask yourselves, standing here before this stele. This isn’t just any stone. It’s a tribute to a man who breathed life into the Low German language, a man named John Brinckman. Born in Rostock in 1814, John Brinckman wasn’t just a writer. He was a humorist, a poet, and a champion of Plattdeutsch. Though he originally went to university to study law, literature, and philosophy, his heart belonged to storytelling. His writings, often humorous and insightful, captured the essence of life in Mecklenburg. He wrote about ordinary people, their joys, and their struggles. His most famous work, “Kasper Ohm un ick,” even reflects on his childhood right here in Rostock! Although he sadly passed away in 1870, his legacy lives on, not just in this stele but in the hearts and minds of the people who continue to cherish his stories and his contribution to Low German literature. The John Brinckman Stele stands as a reminder: even a simple stone can mark a life of extraordinary impact.
