“Do you see the granite? It whispers stories” The John Bauer-monumentet stands before you a tribute to a man who painted dreams. It commemorates John Bauer a Swedish painter and illustrator known for his enchanting depictions of trolls gnomes and fairy tales. He breathed life into Swedish folklore. His work is a testament to romantic nationalism.

John Bauer was born in Jönköping in 1882. His family lived above a bustling charcuterie shop. As a child he wandered the Småland forests. He filled notebooks with sketches of the creatures he imagined lurking among the trees. His imagination knew no bounds. At sixteen he journeyed to Stockholm to study at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. There he honed his skills. He met Ester Ellqvist. They married in 1906.

His travels to Lappland Germany and Italy enriched his artistic vision. He infused his work with Sami and Italian Renaissance influences. He worked primarily with watercolors and prints. His illustrations for the anthology Bland tomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls) are his most famous. They popularized Swedish folklore. They continue to delight readers young and old.

Bauer’s style was unique. He began with tiny sketches. He gradually enlarged them adding detail until he reached the final size. Many originals are small just 20 to 25 centimeters square. He didn’t stick to traditional mediums. He used pencil charcoal oil and watercolor with equal mastery. His choice of muted colors perfectly captured the ambiance of the Swedish forests.

Tragedy struck in 1918. Bauer Ester and their three-year-old son Bengt perished in a shipwreck on Lake Vättern. The loss was profound. It silenced a voice that had brought so much magic to the world.

The John Bauer-monumentet is a poignant reminder of his legacy. It stands as a testament to his talent. His whimsical creatures continue to captivate. His influence on illustrators worldwide remains strong. He may be gone but his art lives on. His memory is cherished. This monument is a fitting tribute in his hometown of Jönköping.
