How many layers of history do you think this chapel holds? This is the Johanniskapelle. It is no ordinary chapel. It is a testament to Bamberg’s resilience. It is also a story of faith, loss and rebirth.

The Johanniskapelle’s story began in the early days of Christianity. A church was first documented here in 1343. It became the parish church for the citizens of Stephansberg. The Stephanskirche was a collegiate church. It did not serve the community in the same way.

In the Baroque era, the Johanniskapelle was renovated. It was lavishly decorated. The winds of change blew with secularization in the early 19th century. The parish was reassigned. The Johanniskapelle lost its purpose. In 1804, its furnishings were auctioned off. The space was repurposed for secular use. It even became a beer cellar for the “Zum Steinernen Haus” brewery.

The Second World War brought more change. The Stephansberg cellars became vital for war production. The Johanniskapelle was incorporated into this effort. The Wieland company built aircraft fire control systems here. This required extensive alterations. Three stories were added. The original church space was barely recognizable.

After nearly 200 years of decline, a group of citizens formed the Freundeskreis St. Johannis e.V. in 1992. Their goal was to preserve and restore the chapel. In 2014, the Johanniskapelle was reopened as a cultural venue.

In 2017, an organ from former Cathedral organist Wolfgang Wunsch was installed. In 2023, the Freundeskreis St. Johannis e.V. dissolved. They had achieved their mission. Jochen Neurath was entrusted with continuing the cultural use of the Johanniskapelle.

Today, the Johanniskapelle is a place for culture and community. It is a venue for exhibitions. Starting May 9, 2025, you can see an exhibition by Mahbuba Maqsoodi. The chapel’s simplicity creates an atmosphere of artistic expression. With flexible seating for up to 100 people and excellent acoustics, it is perfect for musical performances. It is also good for theatrical performances and visual art exhibitions. Lectures and workshops also find an inspiring setting here.

The Johanniskapelle is more than just a building. It embodies Bamberg’s cultural spirit. It welcomes both local artists and those from afar. The Johanniskapelle stands as a symbol of Bamberg’s enduring spirit. It is a place where history and culture converge. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of time within these walls.
