Built in 1991 the Johanneskirche Greifswald stands proudly. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. This church wasn’t always here.
The Johanneskirchengemeinde community grew rapidly. This was in the 1970s. New housing areas Schönwalde I and II expanded Greifswald’s population. The small beginnings of this community started as an offshoot of the old town parishes. By 1976 it was established. The Bugenhagenhaus community center opened in 1979. Finally the Johanneskirche was consecrated in 1991.
This wasn’t just the construction of a building. It was the creation of a spiritual home. The Johanneskirche Greifswald offers a wide range of activities. Children’s programs thrive here. There are also youth groups and a choir. Adults have various groups and Bible seminars too. Taizé prayer services are offered.
The community center is named after Johannes Bugenhagen. He was a Pomeranian reformer. The church holds Sunday services at 9:30 am. Until the end of 2024 a joint project existed. This was a church meeting point in Lomonossowallee 55. It collaborated with St Marien’s Church. This offered services group meetings and counseling.
Starting in spring 2025 the community plans to shift focus. The new center will be in Kemnitzer Wende. Initially services will be held outdoors. This is until a new building is constructed. The Johanneskirche Greifswald continues to evolve. It adapts to the needs of its community. Its story reflects the changing face of Greifswald itself. The church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to faith and community. It continues to grow. It serves the people of Greifswald.
