A majestic spire piercing the Heidelberg sky. That’s the Johanneskirche in Neuenheim. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to Heidelberg’s growth and a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture.
Built between 1899 and 1902 the Johanneskirche replaced a smaller church that had become too small for the rapidly expanding Neuenheim district. Imagine the bustling construction a century ago. The old church stood in the village center. The decision to build a larger one outside it reflects Neuenheim’s ambition.
The architect Hermann Behaghel designed this beauty. He also designed the Christuskirche the Kreuzkirche and the Friedenskirche in Heidelberg. The Johanneskirche though was his first project here. He based its style on Burgundian early Gothic architecture. This is unusual because it’s actually a central building. Unlike traditional Gothic churches it uses a Greek cross design. The southern arm is even separated and used as a confirmation hall.
The church’s interior follows the then-modern Wiesbaden Program. This prioritizes functionality. Notice how the pulpit the altar and the organ are arranged. They create a cohesive space. The church has galleries on all sides typical of a preaching church. Sadly only the depiction of the Sermon on the Mount above the altar remains from the original painting. The rest was removed during renovations in 1957.
On May 11 1902 Grand Duke Friedrich I himself attended the dedication ceremony. Think of the pomp and circumstance. The 55-meter-high tower dominates the skyline a prominent landmark for Neuenheim. The Johanneskirche is more than a place of worship. It’s a symbol of Heidelberg’s vibrant history and enduring faith. It’s a story etched in stone and glass. A story we share today.
