The soaring red sandstone towers pierce the sky. They are the unmistakable markers of the Johanneskirche in Freiburg’s Wiehre district.

This magnificent church isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a testament to Freiburg’s growth. After Wiehre became part of Freiburg in 1825 the population boomed. The old St Cyriakus and Perpetua church couldn’t handle the crowds. So in 1889 they decided to build a new church. This wasn’t a simple project. The original design by Josef Durm was deemed too expensive. The Ministry of Finance insisted on galleries to maximize seating. Durm and the church initially resisted. Galleries were seen as unsuitable for Catholic services. Catholics needed full participation not distant viewing. Eventually Durm compromised. The city council weighed in too. Their first design a Romanesque-early Gothic style was considered too similar to Freiburg Minster. Durm revised his plans emphasizing Romanesque elements. He made the towers taller adding another storey. The towers themselves became a symbol of Freiburg’s expansion under Mayor Otto Winterer.

Construction began in 1894 on the site of Freiburg’s first gasworks. The Johanneskirche opened its doors in 1899. To seat 900 people within the site’s constraints the church boasts a wide central nave and two narrower side aisles all with galleries. The overall length is an impressive 74.3 meters. The crossing of nave and transept measures 16.8 meters in diameter.

Unlike many older churches the Johanneskirche altar faces west. The facade with its octagonal entrance is flanked by those iconic 60-meter towers. Their steep spires point east towards Talstrasse creating a striking visual axis. Durm cited Bamberg Cathedral as inspiration but the Johanneskirche is unique. Its floor plan and interior deviate significantly. The final design draws more on the late Romanesque styles of the Rhine.

Freiburg artist Fritz Geiges created the stained glass windows between 1898 and 1901. The interior was renovated in the 1970s. The crossing with its altar island and celebrant’s altar was redesigned in 1975. Major exterior renovations including roof repairs were completed between 2006 and 2008.

The Johanneskirche is more than just a building. It reflects Freiburg’s history its architectural evolution and its vibrant Catholic community. It stands as a powerful symbol of faith resilience and growth. A testament to ingenuity in the face of budgetary limitations and a stunning example of architectural compromise. A landmark that has weathered storms both literal and figurative. The Johanneskirche a true Freiburg treasure.
