“Art attack” screamed a headline once about the Johannesburg Art Gallery. What could inspire such a dramatic statement? This gallery is not just a building. It is a repository of history and culture. Johannesburg Art Gallery or JAG has been at the heart of Johannesburg’s art scene since 1915.

Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the Johannesburg Art Gallery boasts the largest public collection of modern and contemporary art in sub-Saharan Africa. The Johannesburg Art Gallery houses over 9000 artworks. This collection is even larger than that of the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town.

Lady Florence Phillips played a crucial role in establishing the gallery. Her husband, Lionel Phillips, donated seven oil paintings and a Rodin sculpture. The initial collection was exhibited in London in 1910. Then it was brought to South Africa.

Inside the Johannesburg Art Gallery, you will find 17th-century Dutch paintings. Also viewable are 18th- and 19th-century British and European art. It holds 19th-century South African works. A large contemporary collection showcases 20th-century South African and international art. The print portfolio includes works from the 15th century to the present.

In 1940, the Johannesburg Art Gallery made history. It became the first South African gallery to purchase art by a Black artist. The Johannesburg Art Gallery acquired Yellow Houses by Gerard Sekoto.

Works by masters like Auguste Rodin and Pablo Picasso grace these halls. South African artists such as Gerard Sekoto and Pierneef are also featured. The Johannesburg Art Gallery also presents an extensive collection of contemporary local artists.

The Johannesburg Art Gallery was extended in the 1940s and again in 1986-87. However, recent years have brought challenges. Poor maintenance led to the closure of gallery halls. Concerns grew about the condition of valuable artworks.

Friends of JAG, a dedicated group, has formed to support the gallery. They assist with activities and educational programs. Their goal is to nourish the roots of culture within the community.

Despite challenges, the Johannesburg Art Gallery remains a vital cultural hub. It has been a focal point for urban regeneration. The Joubert Park Public Art Project has contributed to the area’s artistic and social development.

Khwezi Gule is the current curator. He and his team are passionately working to rebuild JAG. They are preserving the past for future generations. The Johannesburg Art Gallery’s story is one of art, history, and community.
