Joey Dunlop was not just a racer. He was an icon. The Joey Dunlop Statue commemorates a man who captured hearts. Who was Joey Dunlop? He was a Northern Irish motorcyclist born in 1952. Ballymoney was his home.
Dunlop conquered the Isle of Man TT. He secured an astounding 26 race wins. Three times he achieved the coveted hat-trick. Fans remember his remarkable skill and courage. His talent made him a legend.
Look at the statue’s inscription. It reads: “In memory of Joey Dunlop 1952-2000. ‘King of the Mountain’ 26 times TT winner.” The people of the Isle of Man were gifted this statue. It honors Joey and the connection to Ballymoney. The unveiling happened in June 2002. Ferry Brouwer from Arai Helmet and Hon. David Cretney did the honors.
Notice the Arai Helmet logo. The Isle of Man Government Coat of Arms and Ballymoney Coat of Arms are there too. They are all beneath the inscription. They symbolize important connections.
Dunlop’s accomplishments earned him an MBE in 1986. In 1996, he received an OBE. This recognized his humanitarian work. He aided children in Romanian orphanages.
