Could a town’s name hold the key to its past? Here in Joane, it just might. Officially recognized as a town in 1986, Joane’s story begins much earlier. Its very name, derived from the Latin “Joannem”, suggests a connection to an ancient landowner from the Roman period. Imagine a “vila” thriving under the guidance of a respected figure named Joanne, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape. While the exact details of this early period remain shrouded in the mists of time, we can picture a community shaped by Roman influence, their agricultural practices laying the foundation for the Joane we see today. Even the church, sadly demolished in 1978, held clues to this rich past. Records from 1065 mention a basilica dedicated to saints like Salvador, Mary, Peter, and Paul, painting a picture of a community deeply rooted in faith. By 1758, the church, also known as the Mosteiro de Joane, had evolved into a two-nave structure. It housed five altars, bustling with confraternities and echoing with the prayers of generations past. Its tower, a testament to the town’s enduring spirit, was erected between 1780 and 1782. Joane’s story isn’t just one of ancient origins, but also of remarkable individuals who shaped its destiny. From the influential Barões de Joane who left their mark on both local and national politics, to the dedicated educators, priests, and artists who enriched the town’s cultural fabric, each thread adds to the intricate tapestry of Joane’s history.
