Could Jinqiao in Chengdu be more than just a name on a map? It’s a place with a past. It was once known as Xiajin, a name inspired by the many toads hopping around.
Let’s dive into the story of Jinqiao. Over time, Xiajin transformed. Its location between Chongzhou’s sandushui and Jiuxian’s xinjindu earned it the name Zhongdu. Imagine ferries crossing the river. The narrow riverbed made for a risky journey. Boats had to be careful not to scrape against the steep south bank. Locals started calling it “chaeryan” or “cer rock”.
Another tale suggests a different origin for the name. It involves Yang Yuchun, a military officer during the Qing Dynasty. He was granted the title of Zhaoyong marquis. When visiting his hometown, he supposedly knocked off his gauze hat and hurt his ear. This incident led to the name “chaeryan”.
In 1992, Chaer Township merged with Hongshi Town to form Jinqiao Town. Fast forward to 2019. Jinqiao town was abolished and its area became part of Peng Town.
Despite these changes, Jinqiao’s story continues. The town is located 9 kilometers from Shuangliu district. It is also 11 kilometers from Shuangliu International Airport. Shuangchong Road connects the area.
In 1999, Jinqiao’s total industrial and agricultural output was 233 million yuan. The rural per capita net income reached 2872 yuan. Enterprises also flourished, with over 500 involved in various industries.
Jinqiao also gained recognition. In 1996, it was named a model town for social security. It also became a provincial advanced town for greening. In July 2020, it was honored as a national health Township.
Though Jinqiao town may no longer officially exist, its history lives on. It reminds us of a time when toads roamed freely. It reminds us of perilous ferry crossings. It reminds us of local legends. Jinqiao’s past continues to shape the present, even as it evolves into something new.
