“Gold Mountain Ridge” is what Jinling Shan translates to. It is more than just a name. It’s an invitation to explore a landscape steeped in history. This is a history that stretches back centuries. Imagine standing here centuries ago.

Jinling Shan is part of the Great Wall. Specifically, it is a section located in Luanping County. This is northeast of Beijing. The Jinshanling section connects with the Simatai section.

The Great Wall at Jinling Shan was built during the Ming Dynasty. Construction initially took place from 1368 to 1389. Rebuilding occurred in 1567 and 1570. General Qi Jiguang directed much of this work. Evidence of this can be found in poems and tablet writings along the wall.

This section of the Great Wall is 10.5 kilometers long. It features 5 passes, 3 beacon towers, and 67 watchtowers. These towers vary in shape and size. Most have one or two floors. A rare three-floor watchtower exists at the west end. Unfortunately, this is currently a military restricted area.

Jinling Shan is known for its original features. Some parts have been restored. Other parts remain in their original, wild state. This offers a unique glimpse into the past. It is a popular spot for hiking and photography. The views from Jinling Shan are breathtaking. Lush greenery and rolling hills stretch out as far as the eye can see.

There are a few reasons that make Jinling Shan special. One is that it tends to be less crowded than other sections. Another is the opportunity for hiking between Jinshanling and Simatai which offers stunning views.

The best times to visit Jinling Shan are spring and autumn. May and June offer comfortable weather. You might even see a “cloud sea” below you from the wall in the early mornings.

To get here independently, take the Jinshanling Shuttle Bus from Beijing. The bus departs from Wangjing West Subway Stop. A private tour is also an option for a hassle-free experience.

Remember to wear hiking boots. The steps on the wall can be steep and uneven. Bring snacks and water to keep your energy up. Jinshan Restaurant and Jinshan Hotel are near the Great Wall Ticket Gate. They are great for pre or post-hike meals.

Jinling Shan offers a unique and unforgettable experience. It is where history, adventure, and natural beauty converge. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the legacy beneath your feet. Imagine those who built and defended this incredible structure centuries ago.
