Think of a time when this area was known as Seventeen Mile Rocks. This was before the Jindalee Bridge connected communities. Now, we stand before a vital river crossing. It links Brisbane’s CBD with the western suburbs. This is the Jindalee Bridge.

The original two-lane bridge opened in 1964. It serviced the new Centenary Suburbs. These suburbs included Jindalee and Mount Ommaney. Developers of the suburbs financed it. That was L.J. Hooker.

In 1974, disaster struck. A barge rammed into the Jindalee Bridge during floods. The barge blocked floodwaters. Fears arose that the bridge would collapse. Police used dynamite to sink the barge and protect the bridge. For two years, the bridge was reduced to a single lane. Traffic lights controlled one-way traffic.

By 2023, the Jindalee Bridge carried 85,000 vehicles per day. A project commenced to duplicate the bridge. The cost was $298 million. The project includes two stages. The first stage builds a second adjacent bridge. It will have four narrow lanes. This is expected to open in 2025. The second stage upgrades the current bridge. When completed in 2027, the two bridges will each carry three lanes of traffic.

The Centenary Bridge Upgrade proposes a new 3-lane northbound bridge. It also plans rehabilitation of the existing bridges to 3 lanes southbound. Upgraded active transport facilities are part of the plan. These benefit pedestrians and cyclists. The Jindalee Skate Park will be retained.

Traffic modelling shows that 152,000 vehicles per day will use the route by 2036. This upgrade is a critical investment. It ensures efficient journey times as Brisbane’s population grows.

The area of Jindalee has changed significantly over the years. In 1918, development was discussed, but it was ahead of its time. By 1959, ring-road expressways were needed. A western freeway with a river crossing was essential.

Centenary Estates financed a four-lane bridge. This led to the suburb of Jindalee. The Centenary Highway/Western Freeway was completed in 1969. Jindalee Primary School opened in 1966.

Jindalee experienced floods in 2011. Parks and the golf course were covered by floodwaters. The State primary school and houses around Jindalee were also affected.

The Jindalee Bridge stands as a testament to progress. It is a vital link for Brisbane. It has overcome challenges and continues to evolve. It ensures connectivity for future generations.
