Why is Jikkō Temple called the “Temple of the Heart’s Vow”? Jikkō Temple, nestled in the tranquil hills of Ohara, seems unassuming at first glance. But don’t let its size fool you. This temple, with its deep ties to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, holds centuries of history and a unique charm. Founded in 1013, Jikkō Temple served as a place for monks to study and practice shōmyō, the enchanting Buddhist chanting that echoes through these hills. Imagine the monks, their voices rising in unison, their chants blending with the rustling leaves and the gentle murmur of the nearby Ritsusen River. Tragedy struck when internal conflicts within the Tendai sect led to the temple’s destruction. But like a phoenix from the ashes, Jikkō Temple was reborn in a new location, thanks to the devoted monk Sōshindō. He chose a site near the mausoleums of Emperors Go-Toba and Juntoku, further intertwining the temple’s fate with imperial history. Today, Jikkō Temple welcomes visitors with open arms. Step inside the Kyakuden Hall, the main hall, and be greeted by the serene faces of the Jizō Trinity, protectors of children and the lost. As you sip on a cup of matcha green tea, let your gaze wander over the exquisite paintings of the Thirty-Six Chinese Poets, their verses seemingly whispering tales of bygone eras. Jikkō Temple is more than just a place of worship; it’s a sanctuary for the soul. Explore the Keishin-en Garden, where the Shinji Pond, shaped like the Chinese character for “heart”, reflects the temple’s commitment to compassion and spiritual growth. The garden’s design, with its crane-shaped pine tree and turtle-shaped island, symbolizes longevity and happiness. Before you leave, take a moment to appreciate the delicate beauty of the fudanzakura, a rare cherry blossom that blooms from autumn to spring. The enduring spirit of Jikkō Temple, much like this unique cherry blossom, reminds us that beauty can be found in unexpected places and across seasons.
