Gazing up at Jibal al Lahat, its peak reaching towards the heavens, evokes a sense of awe. Jibal al Lahat, also known as Jabal al-Nour, or Mountain of Light, holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims. It is here, nestled within the Hejaz region near Mecca, that the Prophet Muhammad is said to have received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel. The cave, Ghar Hira, a small space of just 3.7 meters long and 1.6 meters wide, is located high on the mountain. It is reached by a strenuous climb of 1750 steps, a journey that can take between half an hour and three hours. Imagine the Prophet Muhammad making this same climb, seeking solitude and contemplation. The mountain itself is relatively small, only 640 meters high. But the spiritual significance of this place makes it feel monumental. The peak has an unusual appearance. It almost looks like two mountains stacked atop each other. This unique characteristic makes Jibal al Lahat easily recognizable among the surrounding hills and mountains. Within the cave, facing the Kaaba, Prophet Muhammad spent time in deep meditation. He would retreat here for a month each year, taking provisions and feeding the poor who sought him out. Before the first revelation, the Prophet experienced vivid dreams for six months. These dreams foreshadowed his prophethood and the reverence he would receive. He felt an increasing need for solitude, leading him to the rocky hills around Mecca and the cave on Jibal al Lahat. This cave offered a sanctuary for reflection and connection with the divine. Today, thousands of visitors make the pilgrimage to Jibal al Lahat and the Cave of Hira each day, especially during Hajj. They come to connect with the story of the Prophet’s first revelation and to experience the powerful spirituality of this place. While the climb can be challenging, the reward is a profound sense of peace and connection to history. The view from the summit, encompassing the city of Mecca and the surrounding landscape, is a reminder of the vastness of the world and the power of faith.
