Whispers of ancient legends surround Jhandewalan Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a place steeped in history. Located on Jhandewalan Road near Karol Bagh it’s easily accessible from the Jhandewalan Metro Station. Jhandewalan Temple is dedicated to Maa Aadi Shakti a powerful feminine divine force in Hinduism. She presides alongside Maa Kali.
Legend says Jhandewalan Temple once stood in a mountainous region. People digging unearthed the goddess’s sanctum. This discovery led to the temple’s establishment in its current location. Another tale involves Badri Bhagat a devoted follower of Matarani. He dreamt of the goddess. She revealed the idol’s location to him. This dream prompted the temple’s construction. The original idol rests at ground level.
The temple’s name originates from prayer flags. These “jhandas” were offered during Shah Jahan’s reign. Jhandewalan translates to “place of the flags”. Devotees visit seeking blessings. Many believe that those with pure intentions receive happiness prosperity and wish fulfillment.
The temple’s structure is captivating. The lower level is for Puja. The upper level houses the idol of Mata Jhandewali. Idols of Saraswati and Kali reside there too. A mesmerizing Shiv Mandir is nearby for Shiv Puja.
The temple’s atmosphere is filled with sanctity. The daily chanting of mantras echoes day and night. Special pujas mark Navratri. Durga Puja is celebrated with lights flowers and devotional songs. Kirtan and bhajans are part of the daily rituals. Photography is not allowed in the prayer hall.
Aarti timings vary by season. The mangal aarti starts at 5.30 AM or 6.00 AM in winter. Dry fruits are offered. The shringaar aarti at 9.30 AM features milk nuts and coconut. The bhog aarti at noon includes rice bread and pulses. Evening aarti at 7.30 PM involves chane. The night aarti at 10 PM offers milk. The temple is open Tuesdays and Sundays plus Ashtami afternoons. Night prayers known as Jagrans are held on Ashtami of Shukla Paksha.
