Have you ever felt the thrill of spotting a leopard in the heart of a city? Welcome to Jhalana National Park. Nestled on the outskirts of Jaipur this urban wildlife sanctuary is a remarkable place. It’s a story of transformation. Initially a hunting reserve for the Rajput royalty Jhalana underwent a remarkable shift in the mid-20th century. Maharani Gayatri Devi famously changed its purpose. After killing the last tigress she spared the two cubs. They were sent to a nearby zoo. Hunting ceased in Jhalana even before wildlife protection laws.

Over time Jhalana evolved. The ancient Kalakya Mata temple attracted visitors. Birdwatchers explored its trails. Then leopard sightings increased. It officially became a wildlife reserve. People initially drove their own vehicles into the park. Later in 2017 Project Leopard launched. Rajasthan became the first state to dedicate such a significant project. Seventy million rupees were allocated for leopard conservation. The project fully launched in 2018. Jhalana became India’s first leopard reserve right in the middle of Jaipur.

Regulated safaris followed. This was good for both the leopards and the government. The leopards here are unusually bold. They are accustomed to human activity. The proximity of the temple and early tourism contributed to this. The park attracts wildlife photographers and conservationists. It’s now considered one of the best places globally to see leopards. You can find them in different routes and varied terrains.

Jhalana boasts incredible biodiversity. Flora varies across the park’s different areas. There are thorn scrub forests. The vegetation changes dramatically with rainfall turning the landscape lush and green. The park is home to diverse animals and birds. You might see everything from melanistic cobras and blue bulls to Bonelli’s eagles and bullfrogs. Nocturnal creatures like civets and hedgehogs are also present.

Mammals include chital blue bull three species of mongoose black-naped hare and gray langur. They sustain a healthy leopard population. Many migratory birds visit. Some stay for the winter others pass through. You might see black eagles tawny eagles steppe eagles Bonelli’s eagles three types of scops owl the desert white-throat and the sirkeer malkoha. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise. Today Jhalana is more than a wildlife reserve. It stands as a symbol of successful urban wildlife conservation. A testament to the possibility of humans and wildlife coexisting. It’s a powerful message. We can protect these magnificent creatures even in a bustling city.
