Have you ever felt the weight of history? Right here before you stands the Jewish Museum of Rhodes a testament to a community’s resilience. This isn’t just a museum it’s a living archive. It’s located in the heart of Rhodes’ Old Town adjacent to the Kahal Shalom Synagogue the oldest in Greece.

Established in 1997 by Aron Hasson the museum was born from a desire to preserve the rich tapestry of Jewish life on Rhodes. The museum is housed in six rooms previously used as women’s prayer rooms within the synagogue itself.

Imagine a time long before this museum existed. The history of Jews on Rhodes stretches back to the 2nd century BC as mentioned in the Book of Maccabees. Centuries later in 1116 the renowned traveler Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela noted 400-500 Jews living in Rhodes. Their numbers swelled in 1280 with the arrival of Jews from Aragon. An Italian rabbi visiting in 1467 described them as intelligent and well-dressed. The Jews were even stalwart defenders of Rhodes against the Turks in 1480.

Despite hardship including expulsions and Turkish attacks the community persisted. By the 16th century Rhodes had become a significant Sephardic center with thriving commerce. Textile merchants gunsmiths craftsmen bookbinders and weavers all contributed to a vibrant culture. The Alliance Israelite Universelle school which began in 1888 further enhanced the community’s intellectual life. Sadly this school along with much of the city was destroyed during World War II bombings of 1943.

The museum’s collection tells the story of their triumphs and tribulations. Artifacts donated by Rhodian Jews of the Diaspora bring their stories to life. Judaica historical documents religious books costumes and textiles reveal a community’s faith and daily life. The museum expanded gradually thanks to the community’s efforts and individual donors. A permanent exhibition was put on display in 2002. The museum reopened in 2006 with even more artifacts and improved displays.
