Founded in 1571 Jesus College stands proudly in Oxford’s heart. Its story begins with Queen Elizabeth I. She granted a royal charter establishing the first Protestant college at Oxford. A Welsh churchman Hugh Price championed its creation. He envisioned a place to educate clergy. His legacy however was less generous than hoped. The college initially struggled financially. Despite this Jesus College flourished. Its first quadrangle dates from the 16th and early 17th centuries. A second was added much later. A third quadrangle arose around 1906. The college expanded further in 1971 and again in 2021.
