Established in the 1920s, Jesmond Dene started as a luxurious escape near Escondido. The W.F. Moore Company envisioned a 160-acre suburban paradise. They invested $50,000 in 1926 to transform Moosa Canyon. Jesmond Dene boasted tennis courts, a dance hall, and horseshoe courts. A dammed creek created a sparkling swimming pool. These amenities were free for those who built homes on the 750 available plots. Each plot measured 80 by 100 feet. Jesmond Dene’s grand opening on November 14, 1926, promised a bright future. The community took its name from a park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. This reflected the developers’ desire to create a similarly idyllic setting. Jesmond Dene even had its own post office, albeit briefly, from 1933 to 1935. Grand stone gateposts marked the entrance on Jesmond Dene Road, originally Jesmond Drive. Unfortunately, time and the Great Depression took their toll. Deed discrepancies and economic hardship led to a decline. The once-vibrant clubhouse became a venue for small private events. In 1945, Henry and Ida Zilz bought the clubhouse. They also managed the Jesmond Dene Water Co. until the area joined the Valley Center Municipal Water District. Under the Zilzes, the clubhouse housed a grocery store and a tavern. The Fraternal Order of Eagles purchased the building in the late 1950s, establishing Aerie 2175. The Loyal Order of Moose took ownership in the 1960s. They continue to operate from the building today. Jesmond Dene stands as a testament to both prosperity and hardship. It reminds us that even idyllic dreams can face unexpected challenges.
