Imagine a humble brush arbor nestled beside Snake Branch. This was the birthplace of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Hartsville South Carolina. Founded shortly after the Civil War it served the African American community. Early services were held under the shade of trees then in a simple log cabin.

The church’s story is one of resilience and growth. The congregation moved to its current location in 1898. A new church building was constructed in 1907. This wooden structure cost just $511.21 to build. It was a significant achievement for the community.

In 1939 during the Great Depression the frame building was covered in brick veneer. This was considered a “splendid achievement” a testament to the community’s spirit. Reverend Henry H Butler served as pastor from 1932 to 1948. He was also principal of the nearby Butler School. He was a respected figure in the community. His leadership and dedication helped the church thrive.
