Founded in 1877 the Jerusalem Baptist Church stands before you. A group of forty members left New Light Beulah Baptist Church to create this place. Reverend Joshua Williams became their first pastor. Services were initially held under a bush arbor.
Imagine the scene. Forty people gathered under the shade of branches. Their faith unwavering despite humble beginnings. In 1883 they purchased an acre of land for just thirteen dollars. This small plot became the foundation of the church we see today. Reverend Williams served until 1884. Under his leadership the church joined the Pee Dee Association.
Membership grew to seventy-two by 1887. Some members then left to form St Luke Baptist Church. This shows the church’s influence its ability to inspire others to start their own congregations. The Jerusalem Baptist Church continued its growth. It joined The Wateree Baptist Association Upper Division.
Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s many pastors guided the church. Reverend William Lowman Reverend Simon Jenkins Reverend Andrew Richburg Reverend Moses P Goodwin and Reverend Seamore Jones all served. The early 1900s saw Reverend Green B Neal Reverend Frank Williams Reverend JS Gordon Reverend Frank Richardson and Reverend Harry Taylor lead the congregation. Their dedication ensured the church’s survival through challenging times.
The first church building was simple. Weatherboard walls and a wood-burning stove provided warmth. A fire in the early 1940s partially destroyed it. The church was renovated and moved about 100 feet forward. Further renovations followed. In 1970 a pastor’s study and restrooms were added. Ten acres of land were purchased later. A new fellowship hall and kitchen were built under Reverend Chester Gray’s leadership.
Reverend Patrick A Harvin became pastor in 2002. Under his vision a larger sanctuary was built. It was dedicated in 2012. Nine families are direct descendants of the founding members. The Middleton-Stocker Cohen Robinson Johnson Deas-Throne Mortimore Richardson Harmon and Harris families. Many other families have also joined the church making it a vibrant community.
The Jerusalem Baptist Church’s history is a testament to faith perseverance and community. It is a place where generations have worshipped. It’s a living legacy built on a foundation of shared faith. The church continues to serve its community. It carries on the traditions of its founders. It truly is a church where the Lord is glorified.
