Picture a humble log cabin nestled in the heart of Tattnall County. This was the first home of Jerusalem Baptist Church. Founded in 1867 it stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Imagine black farmers meeting secretly under a brush arbor. They yearned for worship. Open worship was forbidden. Their perseverance led them to Rev Garrison Fraser. He organized the church. Rev R Williams became its first pastor.
A white landowner Miles Moody witnessed their devotion. He generously donated land. The log cabin church was built in 1867. It served as a sanctuary for decades. It provided shelter during turbulent times. It stood as a symbol of hope.
The early years were challenging. Ministers received no salaries. They were paid in farm products. The first deacons were prominent black farmers. They were Samuel Boggs MC Cassedy Francis Geiger Moses and Joseph Johnson Edward Levant and Cyrus Moody. They were pillars of their community.
In 1887 a new church was built. It was a significant achievement. It measured 40 by 60 feet. It had a porch and two separate doors. One for men and one for women. This reflected the social norms of the time. The church featured a central pulpit a choir stand and a back door for the preacher. Ministers continued to be compensated with services and farm produce. The congregation showed its devotion through acts of service.
Tragedy struck in 1941. Fort Stewart expanded. The government claimed the land. The church had to relocate. The move was stressful and fraught with uncertainty. Many families were displaced. The church found refuge in the old Salem Church. Rev Conner kept the congregation together. He preached there while searching for a new location.
A Bryan Countian Wayne Brewton helped. He sold 20 acres of land to the church. The old church building was moved to Groveland. Rev Conner despite many hardships maintained the church’s unity. Rev Conner passed away in 1949.
The church continued to thrive. It underwent renovations under various pastors. The building was improved repeatedly. New additions were added. The church became fully accessible. Modern amenities were added including a fellowship hall classrooms and bathrooms. A new steeple security systems and even an indoor pool enhanced the church’s facilities. The congregation’s commitment is inspiring.
Today Jerusalem Baptist Church remains a vibrant hub of faith. It continues to serve its community. It keeps its rich history alive. It stands as a legacy of perseverance against all odds.
