Stepping onto the porch of the Jerusalem Baptist Church, you feel a sense of history. This building, standing resolute on South Zarzamora Street, has been a beacon of faith in the San Antonio community since 1877. The church was founded by a group of forty members who withdrew from the New Light Beulah Baptist Church. Reverend Joshua Williams, the church’s first pastor, led the congregation under a bush arbor until 1883 when they purchased one acre of land for a mere thirteen dollars. A simple wooden structure was built on this land. The church building, however, has been through a lot in its years. A fire in the early 1940s, caused significant damage. The church was rebuilt and moved forward about 100 feet. It has undergone several renovations throughout the years, including the addition of a pastor’s study and restrooms, a new fellowship hall, and a kitchen. In 2012, the congregation dedicated a new sanctuary. The church has seen a succession of pastors, including the current pastor, Reverend Patrick A. Harvin, who was called to the Church in 2002. Reverend Harvin’s leadership has seen the church grow steadily and led to the construction of the new sanctuary. This church, standing today, is a testament to the history of the community. This is a place where generations of families have worshipped, found solace, and fostered a sense of belonging. Standing in front of this magnificent church is like standing in front of a living, breathing entity, one that has played a vital role in the story of San Antonio, and continues to do so.
