Across the manicured lawns, Jerudong Park Playground beckons. It’s a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and exhilarating sounds. Jerudong Park Playground isn’t just any amusement park. It’s a testament to Bruneian extravagance, a billion-dollar gift from the government to its people. This isn’t hyperbole. Jerudong Park Playground holds the title of the largest and most expensive amusement park in Southeast Asia. Originally, admission and all the rides were completely free. Imagine, a world of whirling rides, dazzling lights, and joyous laughter, all without spending a single penny. This generosity stemmed from the park’s initial conception in the early 1990s. It was designed by an Australian firm as a playground fit for royalty, the same firm that crafted the shimmering “Crystal Arch” at the Istana Nurul Izzah. Over time, visitor numbers dwindled. So, Jerudong Park Playground adopted a ticketing system. Entry remains free, but guests can purchase cards loaded with ride credits. You can choose between an $8 card with five ride credits or a $10 card offering eight. This allows visitors to tailor their experience to their budget and thrill-seeking desires. Jerudong Park Playground has seen its share of star-studded moments. Michael Jackson graced its amphitheater stage twice, first in 1996 for the Sultan’s 50th birthday, and again later that year as part of his HIStory World Tour. Whitney Houston also lent her voice to the park’s history, performing at the wedding of Princess Rashidah in 1996. More recently, in 2022, Jerudong Park Playground expanded its offerings. It opened the “Little Kingdom Petting Zoo,” home to a menagerie of creatures. From playful meerkats and raccoons to elegant Indian peacocks and impressive albino Burmese pythons, the zoo offers a walk on the wild side. Jerudong Park Playground stands as more than an amusement park. It’s a microcosm of Brunei’s unique blend of opulence, tradition, and family-friendly fun.
