Its origins are shrouded in legend, with stories passed down through generations about two fishermen, Aya and Dong, whose encounter near the Sungai Si Anggus river led to the area being called “Jerudong”. Jerudong has always held a place of significance in Brunei, even predating the Sultanate’s rise to power. The Kedayan community, known for their expertise in rice cultivation, settled here, with some accounts claiming they were brought in by Sultan Bolkiah to teach his people. Jerudong Market is a sight to behold, a lively hub teeming with fresh seafood and marine produce, a testament to the rich fishing traditions that have always been a part of life here. The village boasts a strong infrastructure, connecting it to the rest of Brunei via well-paved roads and highways. Jerudong is also home to the iconic Jerudong Park, an amusement park that holds a special place in the hearts of Bruneians. Opened in 1994, the park was once free, a testament to the generosity of the Bruneian government, but it has since adopted a ticketing system, attracting families from all across the region. However, the legendary Jerudong Park Amphitheater continues to resonate with the spirit of entertainment. It has hosted legendary performances by Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Janet Jackson – a testament to the village’s vibrant culture.
