One crisp autumn afternoon in 1831, a chilling wind swept through the newly consecrated grounds of Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery. This is where our story begins, amidst the anxieties of a burgeoning city grappling with a cholera epidemic. Jersey City Cemetery, as it’s also known, became a refuge, a place of rest for those claimed by the disease. Established by New Jersey’s first cemetery company, it marked a shift from churchyard burials to privately owned, landscaped grounds. This six-acre sanctuary, nestled amidst the bustling city, holds a captivating tapestry of stories. Jersey City Cemetery isn’t merely a resting place; it’s a time capsule. It whispers tales of epidemics, military maneuvers, and the lives of those who shaped Jersey City. This land, once an ammunition bunker during the War of 1812 and a battleground during the Revolutionary War, became a final resting place for many. Imagine the scene: the year is 2008. A group of volunteers, led by Eileen Markenstein, begin to reclaim the overgrown cemetery. They uncover hidden tombstones, relocate homeless encampments, and discover a metal canister containing the original 1831 cemetery map. This map reveals a secret: the cemetery extends beyond its known boundaries, up a hill to the west. One day, they uncover a stone staircase leading to a rusted iron door set into the hillside. Behind it, they discover an antechamber, untouched for over a century. Torchlight reveals tunnels leading into the earth, remnants of the site’s military past. Within these tunnels, a macabre discovery awaits: coffins “waiting for burial,” including an ornate one belonging to a 19th-century Viennese Count who died unexpectedly while visiting New York. He remains there, unclaimed and forgotten, a silent testament to the cemetery’s hidden stories. Jersey City Cemetery holds not only the prominent, like William Colgate, but also the forgotten, like the Viennese Count and Alice Holmes, the Blind Poetess of Jersey City. Their stories, intertwined with the history of the cemetery itself, create a poignant narrative of life, death, and remembrance. As you stand here, before the gates of Jersey City Cemetery, remember the countless souls who rest within its grounds. Their stories, etched in stone and whispered through the wind, await those willing to listen.
