Hidden within Seoul’s vibrant tapestry lies Jeongneung 4-dong. It’s a neighborhood with a rich history tied to the Joseon Dynasty. Jeongneung 4-dong is part of the larger Jeongneung-dong, a name that resonates with royal significance. Jeongneung-dong houses the Seonjeongneung, a royal burial ground. Within this sacred space lie the tombs of King Seongjong, the 9th monarch of Joseon, and his third wife, Queen Jeonghyeon. Interestingly, Queen Jeonghyeon’s tomb is more elaborate than King Seongjong’s. Her tomb boasts a stone fence, while his has a simpler retaining wall. This reflects Queen Jeonghyeon’s influence and longevity. She outlived her husband by 35 years. Also within the Seonjeongneung complex is the tomb of King Jungjong, the 11th monarch and son of King Seongjong. Originally buried elsewhere, he was later moved here at the behest of his third wife, Queen Munjeong, to be closer to his father. Jeongneung 4-dong offers a glimpse into the lives and legacies of these Joseon rulers. The grandeur of their tombs and the stories they hold provide a fascinating window into Korea’s rich past.
