Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Seoul lies Jeongneung 1-dong. It’s a neighborhood whispering tales of royalty and resilience. Jeongneung 1-dong is home to Jeongneung Royal Tomb. This is the final resting place of Queen Sindeok. She was the second wife of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. Her life, though marked by royal privilege, was tragically cut short due to health complications. Imagine the court’s sorrow in 1396. The queen, still young, was mourned throughout the kingdom. Jeongneung Royal Tomb originally stood in Jeong-dong. However, its location became a subject of debate. Some argued a royal tomb shouldn’t lie within city walls, while others pointed to the precedent set by tombs located in Uijeongbu. The conflict came to a head when King Taejong, Queen Sindeok’s son, ascended the throne. He ordered the relocation of Jeongneung to its current location in the outskirts of Seoul, specifically in what is now Jeongneung 1-dong. He also modified the tomb’s structure, removing the T-shaped shrine and replacing the twelve zodiac animal deities. Jeongneung Royal Tomb, unlike other royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, lacks the elaborate ornamentation of stone screens and balustrades. It also has fewer stone sculptures. This relative simplicity reflects the tumultuous circumstances surrounding Queen Sindeok’s death and the subsequent relocation of her tomb. For centuries, Jeongneung remained in a state of neglect, almost forgotten by time. It was merely a nameless tomb, a stark contrast to the grandeur of other royal burial sites. This changed in 1699. Scholar and officer Song Si-yeol petitioned King Hyeonjong to formally recognize the tomb. Finally, Jeongneung received its proper title and recognition. Interestingly, the tomb’s rectangular stone lantern is modeled after one found in Hyeonjeongneung, the tomb of King Gongmin and Princess Noguk of the Goryeo Dynasty. This reveals the architectural influences that shaped Joseon’s royal tombs. Today, in Jeongneung 1-dong, the tomb stands as a quiet testament to Queen Sindeok’s life. It also reflects the evolving traditions of the Joseon Dynasty.
