Ever heard of a bridge named after a national hero? Here at the Jembatan Raja Ali Haji, stories whisper on the wind. This isn’t just concrete and steel. It is a tribute to a remarkable man.

The Jembatan Raja Ali Haji is the third bridge in the series. It connects Nipah Island and Setoko Island. It forms part of the larger Barelang Bridge system. The Barelang Bridge system links Batam, Rempang, and Galang islands. Locals sometimes call it “Jembatan Habibie” in honor of Jusuf Habibie. He was instrumental in developing Batam.

Raja Ali Haji was no ordinary man. He was a 19th-century Bugis-Malay scholar. He was also a historian and poet from the Lingga Kingdom. Raja Ali Haji was the grandson of Raja Haji Fisabililah. Fisabililah was known for his contributions to Malay grammar. His masterpiece was Gurindam Dua Belas. Raja Ali Haji himself was named a National Hero of Indonesia in 2004.

Completed in 1996, the Jembatan Raja Ali Haji stretches 270 meters. Its structure is 18 meters wide. The road has a width of 2 x 6.45 meters. It consists of six spans. Each span measures 45 meters. The bridge uses Segmental Concrete Box Girder construction. Its foundation is an Abutment type. PT Bangun Cipta Kontraktor managed the construction. PT VSL Indonesia was the subcontractor. The project took 901 days. It involved engineers, technicians, and workers.

The Barelang Bridge aimed to expand the working area of the Batam Authority. The project cost Rp400 billion over six years. The six bridges span 54 kilometers. Bruce Ramsay of VSL proposed the bridge designs. Habibie wanted varied structural designs. This introduced new bridge-building technologies to Indonesia.

Initially intended for industrial development, the Barelang Bridge became a tourist attraction. The Jembatan Raja Ali Haji stands strong. It connects islands and commemorates a great man.
Nearby Setokok Island is planned to be developed as a nature reserve. It will focus on nature preservation, a nature reserve and science.

As you stand here, consider the legacy of Raja Ali Haji. He was a scholar whose work continues to inspire. The Jembatan Raja Ali Haji is a testament to his enduring influence. It is more than just a bridge. It is a symbol of connection, history, and national pride.
