Did you know that Jeju-do, the special self-governing province of Jeju Island, is the only one of its kind in all of South Korea? Since 2006, Jeju-do has enjoyed an unprecedented level of autonomy, allowing the island to embrace its uniqueness and develop its own unique identity. This sense of independence comes at a price, however. In 1948, the island was a battleground, caught in the crossfire between communism and democracy. The island’s inhabitants were caught in the middle, and thousands perished in the uprising.
These turbulent times are part of Jeju-do’s rich tapestry but the island’s history goes back much further than that. There’s a myth of three demigods who emerged from the northern slopes of Mt Hallasan and became the progenitors of the Jeju people. It’s easy to see how these legends have woven themselves into the fabric of everyday life on this unique island. But there is a less spoken about reality about the island – that it is a place with a vibrant and ancient culture. The people of Jeju-do developed their unique traditions and customs despite the island’s isolation from the mainland. The haenyeo, or ‘sea women’, are a prime example. These women, often the heads of their families, have been free diving for centuries, harvesting abalone and other marine products. The haenyeo are a symbol of Jeju-do’s resilience and independence.
