Open wide the doors of the Jefferson Branch Los Angeles Public Library.Step inside a history unfolds.

This isn’t just any library. It’s a vital part of the Jefferson Park neighborhood. Its story begins not in a grand opening but in a humble drugstore. Between 1912 and 1915 the Jefferson Branch started as a deposit station at the Soffel Drug Store. It blossomed into a sub-branch in 1915 at 2065 West Jefferson Boulevard.

A new building arrived in 1923. Architect C E Noerenberg designed it in the beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival style. The library became a community hub. It thrived for many years. Then tragedy struck. In October 1983 arson damaged the building. The community mourned its loss. But hope remained.

The library reopened in June 1985. It was renamed the Jefferson Branch Vassie D Wright Memorial. Vassie D Wright was a prominent Black historian. The library honored her legacy. The building was small just 1966 square feet. Yet it served its community.

Further renovations followed. In 1994 the library expanded to 2980 square feet. It became accessible to all. Finally in 2002 a major renovation brought the Jefferson Branch to its current size 9000 square feet. It’s a stunning testament to the power of community perseverance.

Today the Jefferson Branch bustles with activity. You’ll find book clubs poetry workshops and story time for kids. The library offers a wide selection of books in English and Spanish. The Jefferson Branch remains a beacon of knowledge and community spirit. It continues to serve Jefferson Park and beyond. It stands as a symbol of hope resilience and the enduring power of books.
