Craving a taste of Montreal? That is exactly what awaits you here at Jean Talon Market. It stands as one of North America’s largest open-air markets.

Jean Talon Market officially opened in May 1933. It was first known as Marché du Nord. In 1983, it was renamed to honor Jean Talon. He was the first intendant of New France.

Before the market, this land was Shamrock Lacrosse Grounds. Camillien Houde was mayor when the market opened. The chalet quickly became important. From its opening until 1961, the chalet served as a bus terminal. Buses went to Laval from here. Later, a library and social services center replaced the bus station.

Major renovations occurred in 2004. An underground parking lot was added. A structure above ground now hosts 20 boutiques.

Jean Talon Market is open year-round. During Montreal’s winters, walls enclose the central section. Outdoor areas become vacant. From May to October, the market buzzes with about 300 vendors. Most are farmers from the Montreal countryside.

Many food businesses surround the open-air market. You will find meat, fish, and cheese stores. There are bulk food emporiums. Dealers sell spices and imported goods. Bakeries and restaurants offer tasty treats. There is even a branch of the SAQ.

Notable stores include Léopoldo Fruit Store and La Fromagerie Hamel. William J Walter butchery is here too. Joe la Croûte boulangerie offers baked delights. Maison de thé Camellia Sinensis serves tea.

Since July 15, 2006, vehicles cannot drive inside the market streets during summer weekends.

Jean Talon Market is easily accessible. It is a short walk from the Jean Talon metro stop. The market offers a wide array of local specialties and products. You can find fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, cheese, and artisanal bakery goods.

The atmosphere at Jean Talon Market is village-like. Generations of merchants and customers have grown up here.

Walls go up after the first frosts each year. This creates comfortable shopping during winter. The “winter coat” comes off in late April as it warms up. Horticulturalists and market gardeners arrive. The scent of flowers and herbs fills the air.

During summer, pedestrians rule. From June to October, alleys close to vehicles. This happens Thursdays to Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Culinary demonstrations and gourmet events often occur here. Cinq à septs and workshops provide entertainment. Jean Talon Market celebrates every season. It is a place to find the freshest produce and unique culinary treasures. This market offers something special for everyone. Be sure to explore every corner of Jean Talon Market. Enjoy the tastes and smells of Montreal.
