“King Jean” they called him. A name whispered with awe respect and a touch of fear. This is where Jean Médecin’s story truly begins. Right here in front of this monument dedicated to the man who shaped Nice for over three decades.

Jean Médecin wasn’t just a mayor. He was a force of nature. A lawyer a soldier a politician who ruled Nice with an iron fist in a velvet glove. His reign spanned from 1928 to 1943 then again from 1947 to 1965. That’s nearly 37 years a testament to his enduring power. He was born in Nice a member of a prominent family. He studied in Paris then served with distinction in World War I. He earned the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre for his bravery at Verdun.

His political career was long and complex. Initially a moderate republican he later shifted towards the far right. He even briefly joined Jacques Doriot’s fascist Parti Populaire Français. This move is fascinating. A high-ranking official associating with a fascist party. This decision shows a complex political landscape. It also showcases Médecin’s ability to adapt and thrive in turbulent times.

The war years were a turning point. He supported Marshal Pétain voting to grant him full powers in 1940. However he opposed the Italian fascists when they occupied Nice. This defiance cost him his mayorship in 1943. He went into hiding. He was later arrested but managed to escape.

After the war he faced accusations of collaboration. This damaged his reputation. Yet through political maneuvering and the support of some Resistance members he regained his position as mayor in 1947. He remained a staunch opponent of Gaullism throughout his career. Médecin’s resilience was remarkable. He bounced back from disgrace to reclaim his power and influence.

He served as President of the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes. He even ran for president in 1953. From 1955 to 1956 he was Secretary of State. His influence extended beyond Nice into national politics.

In 1961 he passed many of his responsibilities to his son Jacques. Jacques would eventually succeed him as mayor. Jean Médecin died in office in 1965. His legacy is profound. Nice’s infrastructure bears the mark of his vision. The Promenade des Anglais the highway network the Palais des Expositions. These developments transformed Nice into the modern city we know today. A fitting tribute to a man called “King Jean”. His legacy is etched into the very fabric of the city. The avenue that bears his name a constant reminder of his long and controversial rule.
