His name is synonymous with bravery and service. His legacy lives on not just in this monument but in the city of Hamtramck itself. A city named in his honor.

Hamtramck’s journey began in Montreal in 1756. He was fluent in French English German and Latin. At 19 he joined the Continental Army. He fought bravely in the Invasion of Quebec the Sullivan Expedition and the Siege of Yorktown. His service during the revolution was marked by courage and unwavering loyalty. He even faced charges of desertion but was exonerated thanks to the inconsistencies in the accusations.

After the war Hamtramck continued his military career. He played a crucial role in the Northwest Indian War. He commanded forts in what is now Ohio Indiana and Michigan. His skills in multiple languages and his Catholic faith helped him negotiate with Native American tribes. He established peace between the Wabash nations and Vincennes. He built Fort Steuben in a competition between his soldiers. The winning team earned six gallons of whiskey.

His military career was filled with both victories and setbacks. He was involved in skirmishes and negotiations. He oversaw the construction of forts playing a vital role in securing the Northwest Territory. His leadership was invaluable. His wisdom and skill in negotiation were pivotal in times of conflict.

Despite his military achievements Hamtramck’s story is also one of resilience and adaptation. He adapted to a new country and a new identity. He was a man of great faith and conviction. His dedication to his adopted nation earned him great respect.

Tragically Colonel Hamtramck died on April 11 1803. He was initially buried at Ste Anne de Detroit Catholic Church. His remains were moved several times. Finally they found their permanent home in Veterans Park in Hamtramck. His final resting place in Veterans Park offers a tranquil setting to reflect upon his remarkable life and legacy.
