Lost in thought, have you ever imagined a Crystal Palace here in Porto? These are the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal. They offer a tranquil escape with stunning views of the Douro River.

These gardens were part of the International Exhibition of 1865. The gardens get their name from the Crystal Palace. The Palácio de Cristal Portuense was inspired by London’s Crystal Palace. London’s Crystal Palace was built for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851.

The gardens were designed by the German landscape architect Emílio David. David was influenced by the English romantic style. This style was popular in the second half of the 19th century.

The Crystal Palace was demolished in 1951. In its place, the Pavilhão Rosa Mota was built in 1952. It was built to host the Roller-Hockey World Cup. Since 2019, it is officially called the Super Bock Arena. The arena still hosts sporting and cultural events. It also houses a multimedia library, auditorium, and restaurant.

The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal span eight hectares. They feature a lake, themed gardens and footpaths. You will also find exotic trees and flowerbeds. The park is family-friendly with seating areas and playgrounds. Fountains and statues dot the landscape. As you enter, notice the geometric layout. A lawn is divided into four quadrants to represent the seasons.

Leading away from the library is the Avenida das Tílias. It leads to the Capela de Carlos Alberto. This chapel is dedicated to the King of Sardinia. He was in exile in Porto before his death in 1849. His sister built it to honour his memory.

On the opposite side of the Pavilion, terraces offer breathtaking views of the Douro River. The first terrace holds the rose garden. Nearby, the yellow building is the mayor’s official residence.

Explore themed gardens. Discover the Jardim das Plantas Aromáticas. This is a terraced garden dedicated to aromatic plants. Visit the Quinta da Macieirinha on the western end. This 19th-century mansion houses the Romantic Museum.

The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal are a mosaic of small gardens. Each garden has its own ambience. Wander the sun-dappled paths. Admire the fountains, sculptures, and giant magnolias. Don’t miss the views of the city and the Douro River. This botanical garden is one of Porto’s best-loved escapes.
