The Jardim do Calvario sits where a small chapel once stood atop a hill called Outeiro do Calvario. The garden’s creation speaks to Fafe’s growing desire to improve its town center. This project began to take shape in the late nineteenth century.
In 1889 the town’s mayor Jose Florancio Soares unveiled the plan. But a Fafe emigrant who made his fortune in Brazil Comendador Albino de Oliveira Guimaraes largely financed it. The garden’s grand opening was on December 26 1892. A vote of thanks honored the generous benefactor.
This romantic-style garden is rectangular completely enclosed by walls. Tall cedars tilias and northern oaks provide a lush canopy. A beautiful lake and bandstand built in 1912 remain as stunning features.
