Did you know that Jangchung Arena wasn’t always an arena? It began its life in 1955 as an army gymnasium. This unassuming building in Jung District Seoul has witnessed a fascinating transformation.

Jangchung Arena stands as a testament to Seoul’s dynamic history. Initially built for military training it was later fully reconstructed opening its doors on February 1 1963. This arena more than a sports venue is a cultural landmark. It has hosted events of national and international significance.

Imagine the electrifying atmosphere of June 25 1966. Kim Ki-soo a South Korean boxer made history here. He defeated Nino Benvenuti winning the world junior middleweight boxing championship. The crowd of 6500 went wild a testament to the arena’s ability to captivate. Even President Park Chung-hee was among the ecstatic spectators. The match was controversial though. A broken ring rope caused a delay adding to the drama.

Jangchung Arena has hosted more than just sporting events. Presidential elections and inaugurations took place here. Park Chung-hee and Choi Kyu-hah were inaugurated within its walls. This further illustrates the arena’s significance in South Korean politics. The 1988 Summer Olympics showcased judo and taekwondo events within this very building.

The arena wasn’t just about politics and sports. It hosted the 1968 Miss Korea Beauty Pageant. In 1970 a truly remarkable event transpired. Reverend Moon Sun-myung presided over a mass wedding. 777 couples from various countries tied the knot here. The spectacle attracted 8000 guests family and friends a testament to the arena’s versatility.

Extensive renovations took place between 2012 and 2014. The upgrades modernized the facility significantly. Today Jangchung Arena boasts a capacity of 4507. It remains a vibrant hub for sporting events. GS Caltex Seoul Kixx and Seoul Woori Card Woori Won volleyball teams call this arena home. The arena also hosted matches in the FIVB Volleyball World League in 2016 and 2017. Scores of international matches were played here.
