Across the Han River stretches the Jangam Railway Bridge. It’s a landmark steeped in history, a steel sentinel that has witnessed Seoul’s transformation. The Jangam Railway Bridge wasn’t just another bridge. It was the first permanent crossing over the Han River, a gateway connecting north and south. Construction began in March 1897, a time of great change in Korea. King Gojong had granted the contract to an American businessman, James R. Morse, as part of a railway project between Chemulpo (modern-day Incheon) and Seoul. However, financial difficulties forced Morse to transfer the venture to a Japanese consortium in May 1897. The Jangam Railway Bridge was completed in July 1900, marking a significant milestone in Seoul’s development. Interestingly, the initial contract included a pedestrian walkway alongside the railway tracks. But the Japanese consortium omitted it, citing financial burdens. The Gyeongbu Line, completed in 1905, increased railway traffic and demanded a second bridge, finished in 1912. A footbridge, a precursor to the modern Hangang Bridge, followed in 1917. The Jangam Railway Bridge, however, faced its share of challenges. A devastating flood in July 1925 caused significant damage, requiring extensive repairs and raising the bridge by a meter. Despite these setbacks, the Jangam Railway Bridge remained a vital artery. By 1944, a third double-track railway bridge was operational, and a fourth followed in 1994, showcasing the ever-growing needs of the city. The Jangam Railway Bridge has stood firm, a silent witness to Seoul’s evolution. From a fledgling city to a bustling metropolis, the bridge has been a constant, connecting communities and facilitating growth. It’s a testament to engineering ingenuity and a symbol of Seoul’s enduring spirit.
