Climbing towards the peak of Jan Joeng Gaai evokes a sense of timelessness. Jan Joeng Gaai resides in Shenzhen. Shenzhen transformed from a small fishing village into a major metropolis. It became one of China’s most important economic hubs.

Shenzhen’s rapid growth connects closely with China’s economic reforms in the late 20th century. Shenzhen was designated as the first Special Economic Zone in 1980. This marked a turning point in its history.

Before the reforms, Shenzhen was a rural backwater known as Bao’an County. After 1949, China focused on developing heavy industry elsewhere. Shenzhen remained primarily agricultural.

Deng Xiaoping’s reforms changed everything. He sought to modernize China’s economy and open it to the world. Shenzhen was chosen as the first SEZ because of its proximity to Hong Kong.

In 1980, Shenzhen officially became a Special Economic Zone. This allowed for more liberal economic policies. These policies included foreign investment and free-market practices. Such practices were not permitted elsewhere in China. The SEZ covered 327.5 square kilometers much larger than the original town.

Investment poured in from Hong Kong and international sources. Factories, infrastructure projects, and housing developments sprang up rapidly. The population exploded from around 30,000 in 1980 to over 10 million in the early 21st century.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Shenzhen became a major manufacturing center. It produced electronics, textiles, and consumer goods for export. In the 21st century, Shenzhen evolved into a center for innovation and technology. The city is home to some of China’s largest tech companies. These include Huawei and Tencent. Shenzhen has earned the nickname “China’s Silicon Valley.”

Shenzhen’s GDP has grown exponentially. By 2019, Shenzhen’s GDP exceeded that of Hong Kong. Shenzhen’s rapid urbanization was accompanied by ambitious urban planning. The city developed extensive infrastructure. This included highways and an advanced public transportation system.

Shenzhen also founded its own universities and colleges. Major Chinese higher-education institutions have established branch campuses in the city. Shenzhen is also home to the Ping An Finance Centre. It is one of the world’s tallest buildings.

Shenzhen became an experimental zone for Chinese economic reform. The success of the Shenzhen SEZ led to the establishment of other SEZs across China.
