Nestled in the heart of Seoul’s Songpa District lies Jamsilbon-dong. A place whose name echoes a past life. “Jamsil,” meaning “a room for sericulture,” speaks of a time when silkworms spun their precious threads in this very area. Jamsilbon-dong’s history stretches back to the Joseon Dynasty. The state encouraged silkworm cultivation. This led to the founding of Dongjamsil, literally “east place for sericulture,” in the eastern vicinity of Seoul. Today, Jamsilbon-dong is a vibrant neighborhood. It offers a blend of modern attractions and historical whispers. Lotte World, with its thrilling rides and vibrant atmosphere, stands in stark contrast to the area’s tranquil past. The Jamsil Baseball Stadium roars with the cheers of fans. Jamsilsaenae Station, formerly Sincheon Station, connects Jamsilbon-dong to the rest of Seoul via Subway Line 2. The name change, occurring in 2016, aimed to avoid confusion with Sinchon Station. Interestingly, “saenae” is the native Korean pronunciation of “Sincheon,” meaning “new stream.” The echoes of the past continue to resonate. The Samjeondo Monument, erected in 1639, marks a somber moment in Korean history. It commemorates the humiliating treaty signing between the Joseon Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty. The monument is a stark reminder of the changes Jamsilbon-dong has witnessed. From a peaceful island in the Han River to a bustling neighborhood, Jamsilbon-dong has adapted and evolved. The land reclamation project in the 1970s reshaped the area. It transformed the former river path into Seokchon Lake, a popular recreational spot today. Despite the dramatic transformation, whispers of the past linger. Jamsilbon-dong invites you to explore its multifaceted story. A story woven with silk, sports, and historical echoes.
