Spanning the Han River, the Jamsil Bridge connects two worlds. It links Songpa and Gwangjin Districts, like a concrete and steel handshake. The Jamsil Bridge wasn’t always the eight-lane thoroughfare we see today. Completed in 1972, it was originally a six-lane bridge, a mere 25 meters wide. This bridge was the sixth to grace the Han River, a testament to Seoul’s growth. It took two years to build, starting in October 1970. The bridge is named after Jamsil-dong, one of the areas it connects, solidifying its place in the local geography. The Jamsil Bridge holds a secret beneath its surface. An underwater weir. This structure, unseen by most, helps maintain the river’s water level, preventing saltwater reflux and unsightly exposed riverbed. It’s a silent guardian, preserving the ecosystem and the river’s beauty. So, as you cross the Jamsil Bridge, remember its more than just a pathway. It’s a vital artery of Seoul. It represents growth and ingenuity. It silently works to preserve the Han River’s beauty. It is a landmark that has quietly served Seoul for over fifty years.
