“Place for sericulture.” Does that phrase spark your curiosity about Jamsil 3-dong?
Welcome to Jamsil 3-dong. It is a neighborhood with a fascinating past. Jamsil-dong’s name comes from silkworm breeding during the Joseon period. “Jam” means silkworm and “sil” means room. The state encouraged silkworm farming. They founded Dongjamsil, which translates to “east place for sericulture.” It was east of Seoul.
But Jamsil 3-dong is more than just its name. Fifty years ago, Jamsil was an island. It sat in the middle of the Han River. In 1971, the Songpa River was filled in. This was part of the Han River development project. Apartments and a sports complex were built. That created the Jamsil we know today.
Imagine Jamsil in the 1930s. It was filled with mulberry trees. By the 1950s, residents grew vegetables and flowers. Cabbages, radishes, cucumbers and pumpkins thrived here. Around 300 households called this area home.
Today, Jamsil 3-dong boasts impressive attractions. There is Lotte World with its theme park. It also features the Lotte Department Store. You can find the Lotte World Ice Rink here, too. Gaze up at the Lotte World Tower. The tower is architecturally impressive. It stands tall on Olympic-ro.
Don’t miss Seokchon Lake Park. It used to be part of the Han River. Now, it is a beautiful park. In early spring, cherry blossoms create a fairy-tale scene.
Jamsil Station provides easy access to explore. You can also use Jamsilsaenae Station. It was formerly known as Sincheon Station. Sports Complex station also serves the area.
Jamsil 3-dong has transformed. It evolved from silkworm farms to an island. Today, it is a vibrant neighborhood. Skyscrapers and attractions dot the landscape. Yet, the name “Jamsil” reminds us of its unique history. It connects us to a time when silkworms thrived here.
