Can you imagine being drenched in rum and turned into a human torch? That’s the tragic fate that met James Mooney, a brave young firefighter whose memory is honored by this very sculpture. The James Mooney Memorial Sculpture stands as a testament to his sacrifice and the dangers faced by early firefighters in Brisbane. James Mooney was a volunteer firefighter in the 1870s, a time when Brisbane was a rapidly growing city with a serious fire hazard due to its many wooden buildings. In March 1877, a fire erupted in a grocery and liquor store on Queen Street. Mooney rushed to the scene with his fellow firefighters. As they battled the blaze, a cask of rum exploded, engulfing Mooney in flames. He died two days later from his injuries, becoming the first firefighter to die in the line of duty in Queensland. His death shocked the city and highlighted the risks these brave individuals took to protect their community. While the sculpture we see today wasn’t initially intended as a memorial to Mooney, it became one in the hearts and minds of the people. Funds were raised for a memorial fountain, but due to bureaucratic delays, it took years to be erected. When it was finally completed in 1880, it bore the names of city council members instead of Mooney’s. This sparked public outcry. It wasn’t until 1988, over a century later, that a plaque was added to the sculpture, finally recognizing James Mooney’s sacrifice. So, the next time you pass this memorial, take a moment to remember James Mooney, the courageous firefighter who gave his life protecting his city.
